Is all the jewellery you sell made from 925 sterling silver?

Yes. We only sell 925 sterling silver. We do not sell any plated jewellery or jewellery made from other metals such as pewter or silver plate.

What is sterling silver?

Pure silver is a soft precious metal and for this reason it needs to be 'strengthened' with an alloy in order to make jewellery. Sterling silver comprises of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper or other metal. The millesimal fineness, the system for measuring the purity of precious metals such as gold and silver, indicates the parts per 1000 of pure metal by mass against the alloy. As sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver and the alloy is 7.5%, its millesimal fineness is 925 per 1000 hence you see sterling silver referred to as 925 silver. 

Does your jewellery contain Nickel?

No, our jewellery is guaranteed nickel free and complies with the terms of the 76/769/EEC Nickel Directive.

Can Sterling Silver tarnish?

Yes, it most definitely can! As with most things, your jewellery should be cleaned regularly to avoid tarnish. You should also clean your jewellery before storing for any length of time to keep tarnishing to a minimum.

Caring for your jewellery

Tarnishing occurs when Sterling Silver is exposed to the elements and comes into contact with skin, chlorine, perfumes etc. To avoid tarnishing it is recommend that your jewellery is regularly cleaned with a soft polishing cloth. For more stubborn tarnishing a gentle silver dip is recommended but be minded to read the instructions on your chosen dip to ensure the silver is not exposed for too long in the dip as this can cause chemical changes to the silver.  

Jewellery set with Gemstones should NOT as a rule be immersed in water, detergents or chlorine nor sprayed with perfumes etc as some gems are more porous than others. Prolonged contact in any of the above can compromise the integrity of the gemstone. It is NOT recommended that a silver dip is used for jewellery set with gemstones as this can cause damage to the gemstone. 

Can Sterling Silver discolour my skin?

Yes, it absolutely can! When the copper alloy is exposed to sweat, lotions, perfumes, acidic skin, salt etc it can form copper salts which can leave a harmless green tinge to the skin. This doesn't mean the piece of jewellery is not Sterling Silver. By following the steps above and ensuring your jewellery is kept clean it will help prevent the build up of copper salts.
